ICC World Cup 2023: Glenn Maxwell's epic heist against Afghanistan went deeper in annals of cricket history

By MyKhel Staff

Glenn Maxwell played an innings of 201* in the do-or-die match against Afghanistan to earn his side a spot in the semi-finals, which is the highest score ever in the ODI run-chase for a non-opener and the highest ever for an Australian batter in the men's format.

That night at Wankhede saw an 11th ODI double hundred and third in the CWC by Glenn Maxwell. The previous record for the highest score from a number 6 or below was 175* by Kapil Dev against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup at Tunbridge Wells.

Ahead of the CWC 2023 Final between Australia and India, let us take a look at his knock and Team India should be wary of the 'Big Show'.

Second Fastest ODI Double Hundred in the Format

128 balls taken by Glenn Maxwell to complete his double century made it the second fastest century only behind Ishan Kishan who did it in 126 balls against Bangladesh in Chattogram last year.

Fastest Double Centuries in ODI's (In terms of balls)

  1. 126 - Ishan Kishan (IND) vs BAN, Chattogram, 2022
  2. 128 - Glenn Maxwell (AUS) vs AFG, Mumbai WS, 2023
  3. 138 - Chris Gayle (WI) vs ZIM, Canberra, 2015

Difference between the top two individual scores

The difference of 177 between top two individual scores in Australia's innings (Maxwell - 201* and Marsh - 24) is the third highest in ODI's behind 198 - Ind vs Sri in Kolkata (2014) and 195 for New Zealand vs West Indies in 2015's WC quarter-final in Wellington.

Wicket and a double-hundred

Only 3 players in the history of ODI cricket (both Men's or Women's) have scored a double hundred and bagged a wicket. Maxwell, who returned 1/55 and 201*, became the second in Men's ODI's to achieve this feat after the Universal Boss, Chris Gayle, with 2/35 and 215 in Canberra 2015.

On top of them, New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr scored a double hundred with a five-for in the same ODI, 5/17 and 232* against Ireland Women in Dublin 2018.

Highest partnership ever

202* runs partnership between Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins is the highest-ever partnership for 7th wicket or below in the ODI's, surpassing the previous 177 among Jos Buttler and Adil Rashid against NZ in Birmingham 2015.

The previous record for the highest partnership for an eighth wicket or below was between Justin Kemp and Andrew Hall (138) from South Africa against India in Cape Town in 2006.

Highest run chase at Wankhede

292 runs is the highest target chased by Australia in the ODI World Cups, five more than their previous 287 when they went after New Zealand in the quarter-final of 1996 at Chennai. It was also marked as the highest run-chase in the ODI at the Wankhede Cricket Stadium, leaving behind the previous 281 chased by New Zealand against India in 2017.
