India began their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign with a comfortable six-wicket win over Australia at the M Chinnasway Stadium, aka Chepauk, in Chennai on Sunday (October 8). With the win, Australia's unbeaten streak in the World Cup opening matches also came to an end after 27 years.
Prior to the loss to India, Australia last lost their opening match in a World Cup was back in 1996 when the Tom Moody-led side forfeited the opening match against Sri Lanka in Colombo due to safety concerns amid civil war in the island nation. Sri Lanka were granted the win via walkover.

This wasn't the only time India ended Australia's winning streak in the sport as back in 2001, Sourav Ganguly-led Indian squad defeated the Aussies in a famous win after following on. The match is also fondly remembered for VVS Laxman's 281 in the second innings.
The Indian cricket team also ended its 19-match unbeaten streak in the past while the women's national team also brought an end to Australia's 26-match winning run in the ODIs back in 2021 with a historic highest-chase of 265 runs.
However, the most famous victory of them all was the 2021 Test win in GABBA, which ended Australia's 32-year on domination at the iconic stadium. Rishabh Pant played the innings of the ages with an 89 not out. The victory also sealed the famous 2-1 series win after going 0-1 down after the first Test.
In Chennai on Sunday, Australia suffered early in the match as they were bundled out for 199 in 49.3 overs as Ravindra Jadeja and spinners exposed the side's batting fallacies in sub-continent conditions against slow bowlers. Only David Warner and Steve Smith scored 40-odd runs while Marnus Labuschange and Mitchell Starc were able to score above 20 runs.
Ravindra Jadeja starred with three wickets, including two wickets in an over of Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey after taking the wicket of Steve Smith an over ago.
