England's Cricket World Cup Upsets: Reigning champions England were on Sunday (October 15) stunned by Afghanistan in match 13 of the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.
The champions, who began their campaign with a defeat to New Zealand in the tournament opener on October 5, suffered their second loss in three games, dealing an early blow to their hopes of a title defence.

Opting to field first, Jos Buttler's England were set a target of 285 by Afghanistan, who had lost their opening two games in the tournament. In response, England batting fell to the spin of Afghanistan led by Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Rashid Khan.
As England folded for 215 in 40.3 overs, the World Champions suffered a stunning loss, which was not their first in the ODI World Cup history. The most memorable one was also in their outing in India against Ireland in Bengaluru in 2011 World Cup.
Over the years, there have been several upsets in the Cricket World Cup, and England have fallen victims to one of the less fancied teams on most occasions. Here is a look at the previous stunning defeats on England in the ODI World Cup:
| Year | Venue | Result |
| 1992 | Lavington Sports Oval, Albury | England lost to Zimbabwe by 9 runs |
| 2011 | M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru | England lost to Ireland by 3 wickets |

| 2015 | Adelaide Oval, Adelaide | England lost to Bangladesh by 15 runs |
| 2023 | Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi | England lost to Afghanistan by 69 runs |
The defeat to Afghanistan on Sunday (October 15) also meant England registered an unwanted record of becoming the first team to lose to all the 11 Test-playing nations in the ODI World Cup since the tournament started in 1992. Here is a look at England's first loss to the Test-playing teams:

| Australia | 1975 | Semi-Final | By 4 Wickets |
| West Indies | 1979 | Final | By 92 Runs |
