By MyKhel Staff

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised the Indian cricket team for its talent and determination despite losing the ICC World Cup Final 2023 tournament as he backed the team after the heartbreak in Ahmedabad.

"We stand with you today and always," the prime minister said in a post on X. "Dear Team India, your talent and determination through the World Cup was noteworthy. You've played with great spirit and brought immense pride to the nation," Modi said after Australia defeated India in the finals.

The prime minister had reached Ahmedabad to witness the final match. He congratulated the Australian cricket team on its World Cup victory. "Congratulations to Australia on a magnificent World Cup victory! Theirs was a commendable performance through the tournament, culminating in a splendid triumph. Compliments to Travis Head for his remarkable game today," Prime Minister Modi said in another post on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi watched the ICC World Cup cricket final between India and Australia in the last hour of the match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Australian Deputy PM Richard Marles was also present.

Modi sat with Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Modi and Marles landed at Ahmedabad airport on Sunday evening separately to watch the final match between the host team and Australia.

India lost to Australia in the exciting game, plunging the cricket-obsessed country into deep mourning. India, who were the only unbeaten side going into the final after 10 wins on the trot, fell flat in the final hurdle. Many celebrities, including actors Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone among others, were in attendance.

The Australians chased 241 in just 43 overs with Travis Head scoring 137 runs off 120 balls in a memorable knock as the Aussies lifted the title for the record sixth time. Virat Kohli was named the Man of the Tournament for scoring record-breaking 765 runs in 11 innings.
