India opened the three-match series with a commanding seven-wicket win in Delhi. Afghanistan were restricted to 156/8, despite Azmatullah Omarzai's 64 and Mohammad Nabi's 33. Arshdeep Singh claimed 3/19. India chased the target in just 13.4 overs, with Abhishek Sharma smashing 82 off 32 balls and Ishan Kishan scoring 42.

India have lost Varun Chakaravarthy for the remaining matches after he suffered a side strain in the opener and has been sent back to the BCCI Centre of Excellence for assessment. Harshit Rana was already ruled out with a rectus femoris strain. For the second T20I, India could bring in Ravi Bishnoi or Yash Thakur, while retaining Abhishek and Ishan after their strong opening-game performances.
