IND vs AFG: Gurnoor Brar Sets Sights on Match-Winning Role for India After Dream Debut

IND vs AFG: "Now, I don't just want to play for India; I want to win matches for India." Those words from young fast bowler Gurnoor Brar perfectly capture the ambition driving one of India's newest pace prospects.

The Punjab seamer, who recently earned his maiden call-up to India's Test and ODI squads for the Afghanistan series, has wasted little time making an impression. Brar announced himself on the international stage by claiming three wickets on his ODI debut in Dharamshala, providing an early glimpse of the potential that selectors and coaches have long admired.

IND vs AFG Gurnoor Brar Sets Sights on Match-Winning Role for India After Dream Debut

Speaking to JioStar, the towering pacer reflected on his journey from Punjab's age-group circuit to the Indian dressing room, while also revealing the crucial roles played by Ashish Nehra and Shubman Gill in his development.

COVID-Era Opportunity Changed His Career

Brar's rise began during the challenging COVID-19 period, when expanded domestic squads created opportunities for young cricketers across the country.

The 24-year-old recalled that his first major break came after impressing in age-group cricket for Punjab, where he had the opportunity to play under current India captain Shubman Gill.

"I was 16 when I played my first district match, an Under-19 game. Shubman Gill was the captain of the team in that game," Brar said.

The pandemic proved to be a turning point. Due to larger squad sizes during the disrupted domestic season, Brar found himself included in Punjab's Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy squads.

He made his Vijay Hazare Trophy debut in 2021 and followed it up with an impressive Ranji Trophy campaign the following season. Finishing as Punjab's leading wicket-taker with 26 wickets gave him the confidence to believe he could become a match-winner.

"That gave me a push. I started believing in myself and realised that I could win matches on my own," he said.

Gujarat Titans Became the Launchpad

Brar credits his rapid development to his time with Gujarat Titans, where he initially joined as a net bowler in 2024.

It was there that former India fast bowler and Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra identified his potential.

"Nehra sir was impressed with my height, my pace, and my ability to swing the ball. His appreciation gave me confidence," Brar revealed.

The youngster also received valuable backing from Shubman Gill, who helped him improve his game while creating a supportive environment.

"My growth truly began after joining the Titans camp. Nehra sir and Shubman Gill supported me a lot. They pushed me to get better every day."

Test Cricket Remains the Ultimate Dream

Despite making his ODI debut and enjoying success in franchise cricket, Brar insists Test cricket remains his greatest ambition.

The fast bowler described the traditional format as the pinnacle of the sport and admitted that wearing India's white jersey has always been his childhood dream.

"My ultimate dream is to represent India in Test cricket. That is what I want most," Brar said.

"Everyone wants to play IPL, ODIs, and T20Is. But Test cricket is the ultimate format. Nothing is above that."

Receiving call-ups in both the Test and ODI squads was a moment Brar never expected to arrive so quickly.

Emotional Call-Up Moment

Like any aspiring cricketer, Brar had imagined the day he would receive an India call-up. Yet when the moment finally arrived, it caught him completely by surprise.

The pacer revealed he was taking his usual pre-practice nap when a friend called with the life-changing news.

"While I was sleeping, my friend called and told me that I had been selected," Brar recalled.

"I was expecting to make the Test squad only, but then I found out I was also in the ODI squad. That was unexpected."

The emotional reaction from his family made the achievement even more special, while congratulations from teammates and coaches confirmed that years of hard work had finally paid off.

Inspired by Dale Steyn's Fearless Attitude

When asked about his bowling idol, Brar named South African legend Dale Steyn without hesitation.

The Punjab speedster admires Steyn's consistency, aggression and ability to dominate batters during his prime years.

"He didn't just take wickets; he made batters fear him," Brar said.

"The way he celebrated after picking up a wicket, the roar, the energy, the intensity-I loved that."

Brar hopes to bring a similar mindset to international cricket as he looks to establish himself in India's pace attack.

Focused on Delivering for India

While many players view an India call-up as the ultimate destination, Brar sees it as the beginning of a new challenge.

The youngster insists that simply representing the country is no longer enough. His goal now is to contribute to victories and cement his place at the highest level.

"When I started my career, my only goal was to get here. Now that I am here, my mindset hasn't changed," he said.

"I don't just want to play; I want to perform, succeed, and stay at this level. I want to prove that I belong in international cricket."

For a fast bowler who has already made an eye-catching start, those ambitions may only be the beginning of a promising international career.
