IND vs AUS, 1st Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Harshit Rana Credits Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah For Debut Performance

IND vs AUS, 1st Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy: Harshit Rana had a Test debut to remember on Day 2 of the first match against Australia in Perth, taking three wickets for 48 runs and helping India dominate proceedings.

The 22-year-old, along with skipper Jasprit Bumrah, spearheaded India’s pace attack that left Australia bowled out for a mere 104 in their first innings, giving the visitors a significant lead that was extended to 218 by stumps.

After the match, Harshit credited his skipper Jasprit Bumrah as well as the legendary Virat Kohli for guiding him through his terrific debut performance.

"It helps a lot to have advice from Virat bhaiya and Jassi bhaiya," Rana said post-play. "Their inputs on where to bowl and their confidence in me gave me a special kind of self-belief."

His dismissal of Travis Head, a pivotal wicket, came as a result of meticulous planning. Rana explained, “We had talked as a side about how to set up a batter. The idea was to attack the stumps, and it worked perfectly.”

Travis Head, a key batter for Australia, walked in at 19/3 following Bumrah’s twin strikes of Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja. Head’s wicket tilted the balance further in India’s favour as Rana’s precise delivery knocked him over for 11. This was a moment of triumph for Rana, given Head’s recent heroics against India in major tournaments, including the WTC Final and ODI World Cup Final.

Jasprit Bumrah, who was leading the side in the absence of Rohit Sharma, had an enormous influence on the game, as his fiery opening spell dismantled Australia’s top order, accounting for four of the first six wickets to fall.

His figures of 5/30 proved his mastery of conditions, and Rana acknowledged the impact of Bumrah’s spell. "Jassi bhaiya creates pressure from one end, making it easier for the other bowlers. It calmed my nerves and gave me clarity," he said.

Rana also reflected on the role his family and head coach Gautam Gambhir played in shaping his mindset. “Gauti bhaiya kept telling me to be patient and seize the moment. My dad always said, 'It will happen when it has to happen; don’t overthink.’ That kept me grounded,” he shared.

The action on Day 2 wasn’t confined to the ball. Openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal extended India’s advantage with a commanding unbeaten stand of 172 runs. Australia’s head coach Andrew McDonald acknowledged the uphill task ahead.

“They’ve (India) got the driver’s seat at the moment, but Test cricket twists and turns,” Rana said. “We’ll need to adapt to the conditions and their bowlers.”

As India builds on their commanding position, Day 3 will be crucial for Australia to stage a comeback or risk further falling behind in this opening clash of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
