India vs Australia, 1st Test Day 2: India's opening pair Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul delivered a stellar performance on Day 2 of the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Perth, crafting an unbeaten 172-run partnership.
This stand marks the first 150+ opening partnership by a visiting team in Australia since Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook’s 159 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in 2010. Remarkably, it is the first such stand outside an Ashes Test since Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth’s 191 at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 1986.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul’s partnership is only the third time in 14 years that an Indian opening pair has crossed the 100-run mark in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries. Astonishingly, KL Rahul has been a part of all three of those feats.
Rahul’s ability to anchor innings in testing overseas conditions continues to shine, while Jaiswal has proven his mettle with a mature knock of 90* off 193 balls.
Jaiswal and Rahul join the elite list of Indian opening pairs to achieve 100+ runs in Australia. Their 172-run stand overtook Sunil Gavaskar and Chetan Chauhan’s 165-run partnership in Melbourne in 1981, only standing behind Gavaskar-Srikkanth’s 191-run stand in Sydney in 1986.
After dismissing Australia for 104 in their first innings, thanks to Jasprit Bumrah’s 5/30, India began their second innings with a commanding lead. The Jaiswal-Rahul partnership has extended the lead to 218 runs, putting the visitors in a commanding position.
As the match progresses, India looks set to capitalise on this foundation, aiming for a massive target to challenge the hosts. With Jaiswal and Rahul leading the charge, history is being rewritten in Perth.
India: 150 & 172/0 (Jaiswal 90*, Rahul 62*)
