Rohit Sharma inched closer to an unwanted record as captain after the Indian skipper lost his eleventh successive toss in One Day Internationals (ODI) ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final 1 against Australia in Dubai on Tuesday (March 4).
Rohit, who had already broken the record for most consecutive toss lost in ODIs by an Indian captain, extended that record and went level in second place with former Netherlands skipper Peter Borren, who had lost 11 successive toss during the 2011-13 season.

Having lost the toss in 11 consecutive ODIs, Rohit is now only one away from the equalling the all-time record of most successive toss lost in a row in ODIs, which is currently held by West Indies great Brian Lara, who had lost 12 back-to-back toss during the period 1998 to 1999.
With this toss loss, India also extended the record for most consecutive toss lost by a team. This was India's 14th successive toss loss in ODIs since the World Cup 2023 final. Earlier, India broke the Netherlands' record of 11 tosses lost between 2011 and 2013 in ODIs.
From November 2023 till date, India has lost 14 consecutive ODI tosses. It started in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in 2023, and continued with KL Rahul, who captained the team during the tour to South Africa.
Rohit Sharma lost three tosses in India's only ODI assignment in 2024, the 0-2 away three-match series loss against Sri Lanka then the skipper lost all the three tosses earlier this year in the home series against England, which India ended up white-washing the visitors.
Despite losing the toss in most of these matches, India has gone on to win the matches that is what matters at the end of the day. Rohit lost the toss in the Champions Trophy 2025 matches against Bangladesh, Pakistan and New Zealand, but ended up on the winning team.
Team India will hope the trend continues as Australia skipper Steve Smith won the toss and elected to bat on a sluggish pitch in Dubai, where the Aussies lost two early wickets and reached 62/2 in 10 overs.
