Dinesh Karthik, the former India wicketkeeper-batter, recently voiced his thoughts on the selection for India's Test squad, particularly with an eye on the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
While Karthik expressed his approval of the BCCI's 16-member squad for the opening Test against Bangladesh, he raised an intriguing question about fast-bowling depth. He wondered if Harshit Rana, the promising Kolkata Knight Riders pacer, could have found a spot in the squad, either in place of another bowler or as an additional option.

Karthik's comments come on the back of Harshit Rana's recent performances, which have caught the attention of many in the cricketing fraternity. Rana, who was called up for India's ODI series in Sri Lanka earlier this year, has continued to impress, notably in the opening round of the Duleep Trophy. The right-arm pacer took four wickets in the first innings while playing for India D, further solidifying his credentials as a potential candidate for the national team in the longer format.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik said, "I just thought, could there have been a spot for Harshit? I felt he bowled well and there is something really special about him. But they already have four good medium pacers."
DK further suggested that Rana, with his raw pace and ability to extract bounce, could be a valuable addition, especially in overseas conditions like Australia. Harshit Rana's rise has been swift. Earlier this year, he had a standout IPL season with Kolkata Knight Riders, picking up 19 wickets in 13 matches, becoming the most successful uncapped bowler of the tournament.
His strike rate of 13.31 was a testament to his wicket-taking ability. These performances earned him a spot in the ODI squad, and Karthik believes Rana's potential could be even more impactful in Test cricket.
Looking ahead to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in December, Karthik feels that Rana's style of bowling, which generates good backspin and lift off the pitch, could be particularly effective on Australian surfaces. "Harshit Rana... he will make a difference there," Karthik added, emphasizing that the 22-year-old's talents could prove crucial in India's pace arsenal.
