IND vs AUS: Cricket powerhouses India and Australia locked horns in their first match of the World Cup 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, October 8.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat first on a Chepauk surface which looked spin friendly. Notably, the team batting first has won three of the last five matches.

Jasprit Bumrah struck early and dismissed Mitchell Marsh for a six-ball duck. Virat Kohli grabbed a stunning catch in the slip cordon. The catch was his 15th catch in the World Cup - the most by any fielder in the ICC marquee event.

A 69-run partnership off 85 balls flourished between senior Australia batters David Warner and Steve Smith. The period saw them score without any major problems.

However, the momentum drifted towards India once David Warner was caught and bowled by Kuldeep Yadav. Warner departed for 41 off 52. He was the second-highest run-scorer for his team in the match.

Later, left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja ran through the Australia middle-order and dismissed Steve Smith (46), Marnus Labuschagne (27) and Alex Carey (0). Australia were reduced to 119/5 in 29.4 overs after the fall of Carey's wicket.

Kuldeep Yadav clean bowled Glenn Maxwell in the 36th over, while Ravichandran Ashwin got rid of Cameron Green in the very next over to leave Australia reeling at 140/7 in 36.2 overs.

Pat Cummins scored 15 off 24 and Mitchell Starc also chipped in with crucial 28 off 35 to take Australia to 199. Cummins was dismissed by Bumrah (2/35). Mohammed Siraj (1/26) wrapped up Australian innings with the wicket of Starc.
