India's star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has joined an unusual list to his career during the Pink-ball Test against Australia in Adelaide on Friday (December 6).
While the day began with high hopes for the Indian team, it ended with Bumrah becoming only the fourth Indian cricketer to get out for a duck in a Test match on his birthday.

India won the toss and opted to bat first in the day-night Test. However, the start was far from ideal, as Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed on the very first ball of the match. Despite this early setback, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill showed resilience by adding a 69-run partnership, stabilizing the innings temporarily.
Australia's left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc, however, wreaked havoc with the ball, dismantling the Indian middle order.
Bumrah, batting at No.10, managed to support Nitish Kumar Reddy for a brief 35-run partnership. But his stay at the crease was short-lived, as he faced just seven balls before edging a delivery from Pat Cummins to Usman Khawaja at first slip.
With this dismissal, Bumrah entered a unique but unfortunate list of Indian players who have been dismissed for a duck on their birthdays in Test cricket. The first to achieve this rare feat was legendary wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani in 1978, during a Test against the West Indies in Kolkata. Kirmani turned 29 on that day but couldn't get off the mark.
Two decades later, in 1996, spinner Venkatapathy Raju found himself on the same list when he was dismissed for a duck on his 27th birthday in Nottingham during a Test match against England.
The third instance came in 2018 when fast bowler Ishant Sharma was dismissed leg-before wicket by Ben Stokes in Southampton on his 30th birthday.
Syed Kirmani (India vs West Indies) - Kolkata 1978
Venkatapathy Raju (England vs India) - Nottingham 1996
Ishant Sharma (England vs India) - Southampton 2018
Jasprit Bumrah (Australia vs India) - Adelaide 2024
While Bumrah's birthday duck wasn't the gift he might have hoped for, it is yet another unique entry in cricket's record books. Despite the setback, the 31-year-old remains an indispensable part of the Indian cricket setup, for his bowling skills.
