Australia pacer Jhye Richardson has been ruled out of the upcoming 3-match ODI series after his groin injury resurfaced during his comeback game for his club Fremantle against Wanneroo. He picked three wickets for five runs but could bowl only four overs before heading for scans and then to the WACA ground to consult with the Western Australia (WA) medical staff.
The first grade match was 26-year-old's first since straining his hamstring on January 4 while playing for his Big Bash League (BBL) side Perth Scorchers against Sydney Thunders. The injury was initially diagnosed as minor, and it was expected that the express would return for the BBL finals. However, he hasn't played any major cricket including Marsh Cup or Sheffield Shield matches since.
Regardless, Richardson was selected in Australia's 16-member ODI squad for the three-match ODI series against India that starts from March 17 in Mumbai.
Nathan Ellis replaces Jhye Richardson
Right-arm pacer Nathan Ellis, who has played three ODIs during Australia's Pakistan tour last year, has been called up as Richardson's replacement.
Richardson's injury has also cast shadow on his stint with Mumbai Indians (MI) in the upcoming IPL 2023. He was bought by five-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) for his base price of Rs 1.50 crore.
A few media reports have recently suggested that Jasprit Bumrah is also likely to miss all the matches for Mumbai Indians. The India pace spearhead has been battling a recurring back injury which ruled him out of the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup 2022.

In that scenario, Mumbai would be relying heavily on Jofra Archer who is returning back from a prolonged break due to injury and is expected to be available for the whole of IPL 2023. Australia's Jason Behrendoff is the other recognised pacer in the squad.
