IND vs AUS: Mohammed Shami Fitness Monitored as BCCI Selectors Decide on Border-Gavaskar Trophy Inclusion

IND vs AUS: Mohammed Shami’s potential inclusion in India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has become a focal point, with selectors closely monitoring his fitness during the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT).

As per a report from Cricbuzz, the BCCI's Sports Science team, led by Nitin Patel, and selector SS Das, have stationed themselves in Rajkot to evaluate Shami’s readiness for the rigours of Test cricket. The pacer, who has been out of action for nearly a year due to injury, is being assessed for his ability to sustain high-intensity workloads.

The seasoned pacer is currently representing Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where his performance and physical recovery are under scrutiny. Shami has featured in four SMAT games so far, with varied performances, including a tidy 4-0-16-0 spell in Bengal’s recent win against Meghalaya.

The focus is on Shami's ability to endure the physical demands of Test cricket after a year-long injury layoff. While his figures in the SMAT—1/46, 3/21, 0/46, and 0/38—have been modest, his fitness has reportedly shown encouraging signs.

Shami also played a Ranji Trophy game recently, bagging seven wickets in a match-winning performance. The selectors plan to observe his progress in Bengal’s upcoming matches before making a decision on his inclusion.

Beyond the matches, his recovery routines and overall fitness are being analysed, with selectors prioritising his physical readiness over raw match performance. With Bengal slated for three more league games, Shami’s participation will be critical in deciding his availability for the Australia series.

Mohammed Shami’s Importance to India’s Test Side

The 34-year-old’s return is eagerly awaited, especially with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj carrying India’s pace attack. Shami’s proven track record, including his match-winning performances in crunch Test encounters, makes him an integral asset.

Jasprit Bumrah, India’s vice-captain and leading pacer, acknowledged Shami’s critical role in the team. “He’s started bowling, and the management is keeping a close eye on him. Hopefully, you might see him here,” Bumrah said after India’s win in the Perth Test.

Selectors and the team management appear to be taking a cautious yet hopeful approach. With the knockout rounds of the SMAT beginning on December 9, Shami’s progress in the next few games could seal his place in India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
