Cricket is a funny game and fans of the game are funnier, and a little stubborn too. An example of it was on display during the Day 2 of the fourth and final Test between India and Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The comical incident happened on the second ball of the last over on Friday. India opener Shubman Gill danced down the track and hit a tossed up delivery over long-on for a humongous six. The ball rolled into the white sheets on the seats (in front of the sightscreen) acting as an extended sightscreen.

Seeing little chance of the original ball being retrieved, the on-field umpires called for an additional set of balls for play to resume. But it was at this time when an unlikely saviour rose from the stands and jumped to the scene of the crime. Despite repeated requests from the security and gestures from umpire Richard Kettleborough to stop his 'treasure hunt', he dived inside the white sheets.

“Oh, the big fellow is gone in!” Ravi Shastri exclaimed, making the incident even more intriguing. “Let’s hope he doesn’t drown there. [They’re] taking a new ball anyway," he added.

Despite Lyon ready to bowl with the replacement ball, the play could still not resume as the fan searched and searched. He waved back at the players and dived in once again. Gill's opening partner and India captain Rohit Sharma looked visibly unimpressed by the delay.

Just then, he popped out of the sheet with jubilation and showed the ball around with his right hand as if he had taken a five-fer.

“Oh, he’s found it! Oh, he has found it. He has found gold!” roared Shastri in the commentary box.

He then threw the ball towards the ground losing his balance in the process and falling on the sheet. However, the beaming smile on his face stayed. The fan was later seen attending a few phone calls, still posing and waving at the camera.

“He might just fall. He’s just about losing balance. What the heck, [ball] comes out and down he goes. He goes down again for the count," Shastri continued with his cracking narration.

Gill had a big smile on his face as the match finally resumed. India ended Day 2 on 36/0 in reply to 480 from Australia.
