A renovated and refurbished Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai attracted a big crowd and a few VIPs for the first ODI between India and Australia on Friday.
This is the first match at the Wankhede after the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) completed the first phase of the work. Around 20,000 fans swarmed in the stadium to watch the high-octane clash between the two white-ball powerhouses.
Also in attendance were a few movie stars and politicians. Megastar Rajnikanth was seen watching Hardik Pandya's side take on Steve Smith's Australia. Bollywood star Ajay Devgn, Anand Mahindra - the Chairperson of Mahindra and Mahindra, Maharashtra governor Ramesh Bais and Sharad Pawar were also spotted at the stadium.
Notably, the match is also the first ODI at the ground since 2020 when Australia had defeated a Virat Kohli-led India by 10 wickets.
India won the match and elected to bowl first as Australia were bundled out for 188. Opener Mitchell Marsh top-scored for his side with 81 off 65 balls (10 fours and five sixes). Pacers Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj picked three wickets apiece. Ravindra Jadeja also chipped in with two wickets. As many as five Australia batters got out for a single-digit score.
Hardik is leading the team in the absence of Rohit Sharma who has taken a leave from the first ODI due to family commitments. Earlier, India and Australia locked horns in a 4-match Border-Gavaskar Test series. The host won the series 2-1 to retain the trophy for the fourth consecutive time.
The second and third ODIs will be played on March 19 and March 22 respectively.
