IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma in High Spirits Amid Sydney Test Speculation

By MyKhel Staff

The build-up to the fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) has been rife with speculation about Indian skipper Rohit Sharma's inclusion in the playing XI. Australia is leading the series 2-1.

Now, India's hopes of salvaging a draw have been overshadowed by questions about their captain's form and availability. Amid this uncertainty, Rohit Sharma was seen laughing and chatting with Jasprit Bumrah during India's practice session.

This relaxed demeanor stood in stark contrast to the swirling rumors. Rohit even participated in light football drills alongside teammates Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Meanwhile, Gambhir was spotted having extended discussions with Bumrah and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, further adding to the intrigue. Rohit's form, however, remains a concern. He has scored just 31 runs in five innings this series, averaging 6.20.

This is the lowest for a touring captain in Australia with a minimum of five innings. Critics, including former players like Aakash Chopra, have suggested that excluding Rohit from the XI might not be unwarranted.

Coach Gambhir's Ambiguity Fuels Speculation

Breaking with tradition, head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the pre-match press conference instead of Rohit Sharma. When questioned about Rohit's absence and his potential exclusion, Gambhir remained tight-lipped.

"Everything is fine with Rohit. The head coach is here, and that should be good enough. We are going to have a look at the wicket and finalise it tomorrow," he stated. Pressed further, Gambhir stood firm, reiterating, "The answer remains the same."

While he confirmed that pacer Akash Deep would miss the Test due to a back injury, he did not disclose the final team combination. India faces a daunting challenge at the SCG. With doubts over Rohit's inclusion and leadership, many expect Jasprit Bumrah to step in as captain if necessary.
