IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma Opts Out Of 5th Test, Jasprit Bumrah To Lead India In Sydney Test

As tensions surround the Indian cricket team in Australia, various media outlets report that skipper Rohit Sharma is likely to be "rested" for the decisive Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, commencing this Friday in Sydney.

In his stead, premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is set to assume leadership responsibilities. The team face a pivotal moment as they strive to equalize the series and secure the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy once again.

According to reports from The Indian Express, Rohit Sharma has conveyed his decision to step aside to head coach Gautam Gambhir and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, both of whom have reportedly agreed to his choice.

This development raises speculation that the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne might mark Rohit's final appearance in Test cricket for India, as he may not feature in the plans for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. The next cycle is set to begin with India's tour of England in the summer. Additionally, with India unlikely to qualify for the WTC final in the current cycle, Rohit's role in the format appears uncertain.

Rohit Sharma has struggled significantly on this tour, managing just 31 runs across three Tests, with his highest score being a mere 10. His poor form in Test cricket has persisted since the home season. Over the course of eight Tests against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia, he has accumulated only 164 runs in 15 innings, averaging a disappointing 10.93, with just one score exceeding 30.

Looking forward, the team management is likely to prioritize nurturing new talent as they prepare for the upcoming World Test Championship cycle, which concludes in 2027.

With the series locked at 2-1 in favour of the Australians, India will need to win this match to keep their WTC Final hopes alive. Following this victory, the Indians will need a favour from the Sri Lankans to beat Australia 2-0 in their upcoming Test series.
