IND vs AUS: Will Rohit Sharma Retire from Test Cricket after Melbourne Match Today?

By MyKhel Staff

Rohit Sharma's woeful outing in the Australia series continued on Monday (December 30) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The India skipper's long struggle came to an end in the 2nd innings as he got dismissed on 9 from 40 deliveries at the MCG, succumbing to the quality bowling of Australia.

Rohit Sharma's struggle in Australia

Rohit Sharma has had a torrid performance in this Australia series. The India captain missed out on the first match due to the birth of his second child, but since joining in the Adelaide match, the India player has had an epic struggle.

After scoring just 9 runs combined in Adelaide, he only managed 10 runs in Brisbane. Rohit's dismal form has continued in Melbourne, scoring 3 and 9 runs in the match. A combined 31 runs in five innings, an average of 6.20, which has created shockwaves.

The numbers speak for themselves: in the first three Tests, he has managed to score only a meager number of runs, with his highest score being far below the standards he has set over his illustrious career.

Will Rohit Sharma retire from Test Cricket?

Reports suggest that the Indian skipper may announce his retirement from Test cricket following the conclusion of the Melbourne Test. While Rohit's decision to potentially step away from the longest format may come as a surprise to many, it is not entirely unforeseen.

The 37-year-old has found things difficult in the Red ball format for a long time now and his awful performances across venues have raised a plethora of questions. Even Rohit Sharma's captaincy in the series hasn't been striking. With the final match being in Sydney and India requiring a victory to keep some of their WTC Final hopes alive, the Indian selectors may resort to Jasprit Bumrah for captaincy.

A reputed journalist from India confirmed on his social media account that the Border Gavaskar Trophy will be Rohit Sharma's final one in the longest format of the game. India has already seen the departure of Ravichandran Ashwin as an international cricketer in this series, and Rohit may follow suit.
