IND vs AUS: Rohit Sharma To Retire After Sydney Test? Report Makes Huge Claim

Rohit Sharma is reportedly considering retiring from Test cricket and may call it quits after the final match of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Sydney. This decision is said to hinge on India's potential failure to secure a spot in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) Final.

As per a report by TOI, if India secure a spot in the WTC final, Rohit Sharma intends to persuade the board and selectors to allow him to participate in the summit clash.

However, if India fail to clinch victory in the Sydney Test, he is expected to retire from the Test format. This news surfaced shortly after India's crushing 184-run defeat against Australia in the Melbourne Test during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The loss further compounds Rohit's challenges as captain, with his record now standing at six Tests, including five defeats and one draw, which only weakens his position.

In the ongoing 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India secured victory in the opening Test under Jasprit Bumrah's leadership. However, losses followed in Adelaide and Melbourne when Rohit Sharma returned to captain the side. The lone draw of the series came in the second Test at the Gabba, where rain intervened and saved India from a likely defeat.

The Melbourne Test marked one of the most disappointing losses of the series for the Mumbai batter. Despite it being the flattest pitch so far, India managed to restrict Australia to achievable targets. Yet, even with their deepest batting lineup of the series, the Indian team fell short in a major way.

The series has proven to be a tough one for Rohit Sharma. On Monday, he could only muster nine runs from 40 deliveries, extending his streak of failing to cross double digits in the three Tests he has participated in. Across five innings, Rohit has managed to score a mere 31 runs-just one more than the number of wickets Jasprit Bumrah has taken (30) throughout the series.
