Tale of two innings: Indian batters resilience and grit put team in driver's seat

By Indranil Basu

First innings, India were all out for 150 and in the second essay of the match, India were 172 without loss at stumps on the second day of the first Test at Perth.

What a dramatic turnaround from the team which just lost to New Zealand by a 0-3 margin at home. This is an ultimate symbol of belief. In all, this Test is turning out to be a rollercoaster of a match!

Indian batters resilience and grit put team in driver s seat

The stark contrast between India's performance in the two innings reflects not just the unpredictability of Test cricket but also the resilience and grit of the Indian team.

The early struggles in the first innings were a continuation of India's woes from the series loss to New Zealand. Thanks to the seam movement from the Perth pitch. The top order's failure, coupled with the pressure of a strong Australian pace attack, left the team reeling. It appeared that the decision to bat first on a challenging Perth pitch may have backfired, as the batting unit was unable to weather the early storm. But the second Innings resurgence was ultimate.

To bounce back in such an emphatic fashion speaks volumes about the team's mental toughness. Openers - Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul - were simply outstanding. They showcased their ability to adapt and learn from first-innings mistakes. The top order finally stood tall against the Aussie pacers, proving that India's decision to back them wasn't entirely misplaced.

Who says that this team is missing captain Rohit Sharma? There weren't big guns either last time India played and beat Australia. But this time, Jaiswal was particularly brutal in his approach while Rahul was like a copybook batter who stood the ground. Together they adjusted to the pitch conditions, especially the bounce and pace. This suggests solid guidance from the coaching staff and a focused effort to improve.
While Rishabh Pant and Nitish Reddy were the warriors in the first innings, their approach might have inspired the team to take on the Aussie bowlers with more intent in the second.

This opening partnership standing unbeaten at 172 marked a significant departure from the first innings collapse, giving India a fighting chance to stay in the game with an overall lead of 218 runs. Anything above 300 to chase in front of the Aussies will only put pressure on the hosts. From the look of it, India are right ahead in this Test match, really!
