In a solid display of grit, determination and sportsmanship, India pacer Umesh Yadav took field for India against Australia in the third Test despite his father's death a few days ago.

Umesh's father Tilak Yadav died aged 74 due to a prolonged illness in February end. He was undergoing treatment in a private hospital in Nagpur but was brought back home after no signs of improvement. He was a retired employee of WCL at Valni Coal Mine. He was a wrestling fan and is survived by sons Ramesh, Kamalesh and Umesh.

The availability of 35-year-old Umesh was uncertain in this moment of grief, however, the Vidarbha pacer showed character and turned up for the third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. He was inducted in the eleven after the management decided to rest Mohammed Shami.

After an epic India collapse, Umesh walked in to bat at number 10 and was in his usual elements with the bat. He slogged sweeped veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon for a six before dealing with Todd Murphy in a similar fashion to take the Indian score past 100. A smashed another four off Murphy before being trapped LBW by left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann who completed his maiden five-wicket haul with the scalp. Umesh scored 17 off 13 balls.

Umesh Yadav has featured in 55 Test matches for India and scored 858 runs at a strike-rate of 52.91. He has 165 wickets to his name in the format.

India were bundled out for 109 in the first innings and Umesh was the joint third-highest run-scorer alongside KS Bharat. Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill scored 22 and 21 runs respectively.

After opting to bat first, India's innings collapsed after the departure of their captain Rohit Sharma. The side lost its first five wickets in the first 11.2 overs which saw them score 45 runs.

India have already retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after winning the first two Test matches in Nagpur and Delhi. A win in any of the last two Tests will see them book a berth in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23.
