IND vs AUS: Why Mohammed Siraj Faced a Harsher Penalty Than Travis Head for the Same Violation

IND vs AUS: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj and Australian batsman Travis Head found themselves at the centre of a heated altercation during the day-night Test in Adelaide, leading to sanctions under the ICC's Code of Conduct.

While both players admitted to their offenses, Siraj received a stricter punishment, raising questions about the disparity in penalties. The incident occurred on day two of the Test after Siraj dismissed Head, who had played a scintillating knock of 140 runs off 141 balls.

Mohammed Siraj Faced a Heavier Penalty

Siraj's animated celebration led to an exchange of words between the two players. The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, along with teammates Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, stepped in to diffuse the tension, but the damage was already done. The Adelaide crowd responded with boos, further intensifying the drama.

The ICC disciplinary panel, headed by Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle, fined Siraj 20% of his match fee under Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct. This article pertains to using language or gestures that could provoke or demean a batter upon dismissal.

On the other hand, Head was charged under Article 2.13, which addresses abusive language during a match. Notably, Head avoided a financial penalty, although both players received one demerit point each-marking their first offenses in 24 months.

Explaining the disparity, the ICC clarified that Siraj's actions were deemed more provocative, as they occurred immediately after dismissing Head. Such actions are considered a direct violation of the spirit of cricket and are treated with greater severity. Head, meanwhile, was penalised for his response but was spared a monetary fine, as his actions were viewed as a reaction rather than an instigation.

In post-match comments, Head expressed regret over the incident, admitting that his reaction may have gone too far. Siraj, however, disputed Head's account of the altercation. "I only celebrated, and he abused me. What he said in the press conference wasn't true," Siraj told Star Sports.

The incident highlights the fine line players must tread in the heat of competition. While passion is integral to cricket, maintaining respect and adhering to the sport's code of conduct remains paramount.
