IND vs AUS, World Cup 2023: Steve Smith makes amazing blunder, India not complaining

India are on top of their game against Australia in the World Cup 2023 final today at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Despite scoring a modest 240 runs, the hosts are currently on a rampage as they have picked up three Australian wickets already within the first eight overs. Jasprit Bumrah was excellent as the Indian facial aspect of two wickets, while Mohammed Shami also gave India the first blow with the wicket of David Warner.

Steve Smith

After David Warner, Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith have also departed without troubling a lot. Marsh was dismissed for 15 runs, while Australia's batting gladiator Steve Smith has also gone back to the pavilion.

But Smith's decision after being given out has become the talking point. The Australian batter was foxed by Bumrah with a slower delivery. The ball hit the pad and the umpire obliged the Indian appeal, giving Smith the marching orders.

After a brief chat with his partner Marnus Labuschagne, the Aussie batter decided to walk off and didn't challenge the decision. But after Smith's departure, the TV Replay showed that the impact was outside off stump.

In terms of the rules on LBW decisions, whenever the impact, which means the meeting point of the ball with the pad is outside the off stump, then the player cannot be given out.

Hence had Steve Smith taken the review on that occasion, the decision would have been overturned and Smith would have stayed at the crease. It is a massive blow for Australia but the Indians won't mind as they have got the big fish wrapped and dispatched.

Journalist and commentator Ayaz Memon thinks Steve Smith's surreal mistake can cost Australia the World Cup.

"Smith's brain fade moment could well cost Australia the final," he wrote on his X profile.
