IND vs BAN 2024: Four milestones Virat Kohli can achieve in Test series vs Bangladesh

Virat Kohli has been one of the cornerstones of India's batting line-up for more than a decade. India's run-machine recently retired from T20Is in the wake of India's scintillating win in T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa.

After bidding adieu to his illustrious T20I career, the veteran cricketer has devoted himself to ODIs and Test cricket. He will be next seen in the cricketing scene in the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh.

He is certainly one of the players to watch out for in the series, with the Test opener slated to begin on September 19 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. He is the second leading run-scorer against Bangladesh among active Test players. Meanwhile, Kohli will be eyeing multiple milestones in this series and let's take a look at them below.

1. 9000 runs milestone: Virat Kohli is just 152 runs away from reaching 9000 runs in Test cricket. With two matches against Bangladesh, he has a strong chance to achieve this feat. Taking his current form into account, he is very much capable of pulling off the milestone in the home conditions. In doing so, he could also surpass former England cricketer Graham Gooch’s tally of 8900 runs.

2. Could go past Cheteshwar Pujara: The senior could also go past Cheteshwar Pujara’s run tally against Bangladesh. Pujara was dropped from the team after a poor batting display in the World Test Championship Final in 2023 and hasn't featured in the setup since then. For the record, Pujara has scored 468 runs against Bangladesh whereas Kohli, who currently has 437 runs, needs 32 more to surpass Pujara.

3. Fifties Milestone: It is worth noting that the Delhi-born cricketer has slammed 30 fifties in Test cricket, the same as legends Gary Sobers and Justin Langer. However, Kohli has never hit a fifty against Bangladesh in his nine Test innings. A single fifty in the upcoming series would help him edge past Sobers and Langer's tally of Test fifties.

4. Could surpass Don Bradman’s Centuries: The 35-year-old has hit as many as 29 centuries in his Test career, matching the great Don Bradman's tally. If he scores one more century in the series, then he would surpass Bradman and tie him with Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Matthew Hayden, who have hit 30 Test centuries apiece.
