By Sushruta Bhattacharjee

In the third T20I match of the IND vs BAN series, India set a formidable target of 298 runs against Bangladesh on Saturday, October 12.

A 173-run partnership from Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav propelled India to the scoreline, aided by strong performances from Riyan Parag and Hardik Pandya as well.

India posted highest T20I total among Test-playing nations

The mammoth scoreline marked one of the highest first-innings totals in T20I history, behind Nepal's record of 314/3 against Mongolia. However, let's have a look at how this performance ranks among the top five highest totals posted by Test-playing nations in T20I matches.

#5. Sri Lanka (260/6) vs Kenya, 2007

Sri Lanka unleashed a brutal batting performance to put up 260/6 in their ICC World Twenty20 clash against Kenya in Johannesburg on September 14, 2007. Sanath Jayasuriya led the assault with a player-of-the-match performance, scoring 88 runs from 44 deliveries, peppered with 11 boundaries and 4 towering sixes.

Mahela Jayawardene added further momentum to the innings, smashing 65 off just 27 balls, with nine boundaries and two maximums. Jehan Mubarak added fireworks at the death, smashing 46 off just 13 balls to push Sri Lanka past the 250-run mark, making it the first nation to reach that milestone.

#4. Australia (263/3) vs Sri Lanka, 2016

Australia's total of 263/3 against Sri Lanka at Pallekele ranks among the highest-ever in T20I cricket. Glenn Maxwell was the architect of this carnage, smashing an unbeaten 145 from just 65 balls. His blistering knock included 14 boundaries and nine towering sixes, striking at an astonishing rate of 223.07.

Captain David Warner and Usman Khawaja provided steady support early on, scoring 28 and 36, respectively. Later, Travis Head's explosive 45 off 18 balls helped push Australia to their mammoth total. Despite some occasional breakthroughs, Sri Lanka's bowling unit had no answers to Maxwell's relentless onslaught, with Thisara Perera and Kasun Rajitha being the most expensive, conceding over 14 runs per over.

#3. England (267/3) vs West Indies, 2023

In the fourth T20I of the England tour of West Indies in 2023, the Three Lions posted a total of 267/3. Wales-born wicketkeeper-batter Phil Salt led the charge with a blistering 119 off 57 balls, hammering 10 sixes in a ruthless display of power hitting. His partnership with captain Jos Buttler, who contributed a rapid 55 from 29 deliveries, set a strong foundation for England's innings.

Later, Liam Livingstone's explosive 54* from 21 balls continued the momentum, ensuring England surpassed 260. Despite brief breakthroughs from West Indies bowlers, including wickets from Andre Russell and Akeal Hosein, the hosts struggled to contain the English onslaught, with Forde, Holder, and Motie each conceding over 50 runs.

#2. Afghanistan (278/3) vs Ireland, 2019

Afghanistan recorded the second-highest total in T20I history with an incredible 278/3 against Ireland on February 23, 2019, in Dehradun. Hazratullah Zazai played a monumental innings, smashing 162* off 62 balls, featuring 11 fours and 16 sixes along with an astonishing strike rate of 261.29.

His unbeaten knock propelled Afghanistan to their imposing total, with Usman Ghani contributing 73 off 48 balls in a 236-run opening stand, laying the foundation for this record-breaking feat for the nation which gained Test-playing status only two years ago.

#1. India (297/6) vs Bangladesh, 2024

India's total of 297 runs is currently the highest-ever first-innings score by a Test-playing nation in T20I matches. The Indian innings was powered by an explosive 111 off 47 balls by Sanju Samson, including 11 fours and 8 sixes, maintaining a striking 236.17 strike rate. His partnership of 173 runs with Suryakumar Yadav (75 off 35 balls) drove the innings into high gear.

Hardik Pandya further bolstered the total with a quickfire 47 off 18 balls, pushing India to an impressive 297/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Bangladesh's bowlers struggled to contain the onslaught, with Tanzim Sakib's three-wicket haul proving insufficient to stem the flow of runs.
