IND vs BAN: Ashwin, Jadeja run riot as India thrash Bangladesh by 280 runs to win Chennai Test

IND vs BAN: Ravichandran Ashwin picked a six-wicket haul, and Ravindra Jadeja also chipped in with three wickets as India thrashed Bangladesh by 280 runs in the first Test match in Chennai.

Bangladesh started off confidently on Day 4 and did not lose any wicket in the first hour, but the introduction of Ashwin after it became the deathbed for Bangladesh. The 38-year-old, who scored a hundred in the first innings, dismissed Shakib Al Hasan and broke his 48-run partnership with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to open the floodgates.

The remaining five wickets also fell in less than one hour as India completed a comprehensive win with more than five sessions left in the match. Jadeja looked more threatening than Ashwin, and picked three on the final day. He is now just one wicket short of his 300th scalp.

Chasing a 515-run target, Bangladesh got off to an excellent start before tea on Day 3. Opener Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam partnered for 62 runs - the highest by a Bangladesh opening pair in India, but once the former was removed by Jasprit Bumrah, India capitalised and picked three more wickets before the end of day play.

Starting from their overnight score of 158/4, Bangladesh could add only 76 runs before getting bundled out for 234. The visitors played well in patches, and could not capitalise when they had the opportunity.

India were six down for 144 after being asked to bat first on the red-soil pace-friendly Chennai surface. But a marathon 199-run partnership between Ashwin, and Jadeja propelled India to 376, and paved India's way back in the match.

The Indian pace unit of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep gave India further edge. Bumrah picked four wickets, while Siraj and Akash picked two each to wrap up Bangladesh's first innings at 149.

India declared their second innings at 287/4 after hundreds from comeback man Rishabh Pant (109) and Shubman Gill (119*).
