IND vs BAN: Explained - Why Sanju Samson opened with Rohit Sharma and what his failure in warm-up match means?

IND vs BAN: The move by the Indian cricket team to send Sanju Samson to open with Rohit Sharma in the only warm-up match against Bangladesh at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Saturday, January 1.

Fans and experts were anticipating either Virat Kohli or Yashasvi Jaiswal to open with Rohit Sharma, however Samson instead walked out to open with the Indian captain.

Virat Kohli arrived in the USA late and was always doubtful to feature in the warm-up match against Bangladesh. But Yashasvi Jaiswal was expected to open in his absence.

Rajasthan Royals captain walked amid a huge roar from the fans as on-air commentator Sanjay Manjrekar expressed his surprise and also revealed his fellow commentator Sanjay Banger, the former batting coach of India, was also equally shocked.

After Sanju Samson failed to capitalise on the opportunity and got out for one off six balls, Rishabh Pant walked out to bat at number three. The same solved the puzzle a little.

IND vs BAN Warm-up: Why Sanju Samson opened with Rohit Sharma?

Pant walking in right after Samson's dismissal could not be a coincidence. This was a clear hint that the management was looking to try out both the wicketkeeper-batters early and choose one between them for the main event. India are scheduled to kick off their campaign against Ireland on June 5 at the same venue.

Talking about the pitch of the newly-designed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, the Indian batters found batting really tough. The surface looked slow, but there was visible bounce on the drop-in pitch brought from Australia.

What Sanju Samson's failure means?

Samson might have dropped another golden opportunity to seal his place in India's playing eleven for the T20 World Cup 2024. Had he scored briskly, he would have pipped Pant for a place in the eleven.

Pant, on the other hand, smashed three sixes and three boundaries off his first 20 deliveries to announce himself as India's first-choice wicketkeeper-batter for the T20 World Cup 2024. He scored 53 runs off 32 balls (4 fours, 4 sixes) before retiring out to give batting opportunity to his teammates.

India to open with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli?

If Yashasvi Jaiswal was to open in the Ireland match, India would have wanted him to get the first feel of the Nassau surface. Samson and Pant playing against him could be a sign that India are looking to open with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Many have reckoned that Kohli's potential as a T20I batter could be best tapped if he opens for India. He scored 741 runs at a strike rate in excess of 150 runs as an opener in IPL 2024 to win the Orange Cap.

Talking about Pant and Samson, both the players had a good IPL 2024 season. While Samson scored over 500 runs, Pant also made a magical comeback after a 14-month-long injury layoff due to the near-fatal car accident in December 2022. He scored 446 runs in 13 matches at an average of 40.54 and a strike rate of 155.40.
