IND vs BAN: List of Tests where Ravichandran Ashwin scored a century and took five wickets

By Sushruta Bhattacharjee

India registered a dominant victory over Bangladesh in the first Test match in Chennai, and the biggest reason for the win was a heroic performance from Ravichandran Ashwin. The veteran off-spinner ran riot in the first Test match, picking up six wickets while also scoring a superb 113 runs from 133 deliveries.

This marked the fourth time that the world No. 1 Test bowler scored a century and took a five-wicket haul in the same match. This is a historic feat as only the legendary Ian Botham has achieved this feat more than Ashwin, with the former English bowler having done this five times.

Let's have a look at the three other Test matches where this incredible feat was achieved by Ravichandran Ashwin.

India vs England (February 13-16, 2021)

The last time that Ravichandran Ashwin scored a century and took five wickets in the same Test match was just three years ago during the England tour of India in 2021. The tour was a successful one for India, with the Men in Blues winning the Test, ODI, and T20I series.

However, Ashwin's masterclass came in the second Test match in his hometown of Chennai. India had registered a decent total of 329 runs in the first innings, and the off-spinner stopped England at just 134 runs with a bowling figure of 5/43.

Some of the important wickets that he took included Dom Sibley (16 runs in 25 balls) and Ben Stokes (18 runs in 34 balls).

After scoring just 13 runs in the first innings, Ashwin then scored 106 runs in 148 deliveries in the second innings to take India's total to 286. He had good bowling stats in the second innings as well, registering figures of 3/53 to set up an Indian victory by 317 runs.

India vs West Indies (July 21-24, 2016)

India's tour of West Indies and the United States in 2016 was a mixed one in terms of results, with Virat Kohli and co. winning the Test series, and the Windies winning the T20I series.

However, the opening Test match was one to remember for India as they defeated West Indies, freshly crowned the T20I World Cup champion, by an innings and 92 runs.

Ravichandran Ashwin, who was an ever-present part of the Indian cricket team at that point, was a revelation with the bat in the first innings. After a masterful double century from captain Virat Kohli, Ashwin scored 113 runs from 253 deliveries to take India's total to 566/8.

The spin master then devastated the West Indies batting lineup with the ball in the second follow-on innings, dismissing opener Rajendra Chandrika as well as the half-centurion Marlon Samuels.

After failing to take any wickets in the first inning, Ashwin ended the second innings with an astonishing figure of 7/83 to start India's dominance in the Test series against West Indies.

India vs West Indies (November 22-26, 2011)

The first time that Ravichandran Ashwin scored a century and took five wickets in a single Test match was also against West Indies, with the feat taking place during the third Test match of the latter's tour of India in 2011.

The West Indies of 2011 was a force to be reckoned with, and the Daren Sammy-led team scored a mammoth 590 runs in the first inning. The scoreline could have been worse for India were it not for a bright performance from Ravichandran Ashwin, who registered a figure of 5/156 with the ball.

Despite conceding more runs than usual, Ashwin took the crucial wickets of both the openers Adrian Barath and Kraigg Brathwaite, as well as Marlon Samuels, all three of whom had scored more than sixty runs in the innings.

Ashwin, then aged just 25, announced his mettle to the cricketing world with his performance with the bat. After an agonising century miss from Sachin Tendulkar (94 runs from 153 balls), Ashwin took charge and scored 103 runs from 118 deliveries to take India's total to 482.

Ashwin was equally lethal in the second innings as well, taking 4 wickets for 34 runs to restrict West Indies to a meagre total of 134. His man-of-the-match performance gave India a chance to pull back in the match, which ultimately ended a draw.
