IND vs BAN: Riyan Parag tries to imitate Lasith Malinga, ends up bowling No Ball

By MyKhel Staff

Riyan Parag is known for his destructive batting and hitting sixes, but in domestic circuit, the Assam player is also a potent leg-break bowler who knows how to turn the ball efficiently.

In his solo ODI encounter, Parag picked up three wickets with the ball. Riyan has also rolled his arms in the T20Is for India and picked up a wicket in the 2nd T20I match against Bangladesh on Wednesday (October 9).

As India were on course to win in Delhi, captain Suryakumar Yadav handed the ball to Parag. The 22-year-old obliged his captain and got a wicket in his very first over. But before taking the wicket, in the fourth ball of his over, Parag tried something different.

IND vs BAN: What did Riyan Parag attempt to imitate Lasith Malinga?

Riyan Parag took a detour from his original action and tried a slingy action, imitating Lasith Malinga. The action was almost like something Kedar Jadhav used to do in his India days. But the delivery ended up being a horror for Riyan, as his attempted variation ended up becoming a back-foot No Ball.

The youngster attempted something different but the execution let him down completely. His direction was all wrong, while the new attempt made him over-cautious with the front foot which resulted in a back-foot No Ball.

The rules governing this aspect of cricket, as stipulated by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in Law 21.5, clearly state, "The bowler's back foot must land within and not touch the return crease, appertaining to his/her stated mode of delivery. - behind the popping crease. If the bowler's end umpire is not satisfied that all of these three conditions have been met, he/she shall call and signal No ball."

As soon as Parag's back foot crossed the white boundary to his left, it immediately qualified as a no-ball. Notably, his foot did not merely cross the tramline but landed outside the pitch entirely, making the umpire's decision straightforward after a few checks.

Parag compensated his extra delivery with a wicket as the dismissal came in the 7th ball of his over. He also executed the Free Hit delivery brilliantly as it didn't concede a run.

It was also a special night for the Indian team as they secured the T20I series with a victory by 86 runs. All of the seven bowlers used by Suryakumar Yadav managed to pick up at least a wicket. India, batting earlier, scored a massive 221 runs courtesy of newcomer Nitish Reddy (74 off 34 balls) and Rinku Singh (53 off 29 balls). Riyan Parag also played a short cameo at the end, scoring 15 runs off just 6 deliveries.

India's final T20 encounter against Bangladesh will be on Saturday (October 12) as the two nations meet in Hyderabad.
