The Punjab batter struggled when he first started to bat at number three but now has two hundreds and three fifties in his last eight innings while batting at the position.
The right-hander walked in the middle after the departure of Rohit Sharma in the third over. Gill was already under pressure after the failure in his first outings and it mounted after Yashasvi Jaiswal also departed leaving India reeling at 28/2.
However, the youngster looked determined for a longer stay in the second innings, and applied himself beautifully to showcase his class. He hit four boundaries en route to his fifty, showcasing why he is rated highly on each occasion.
Gill's form is of utmost importance considering the upcoming tough tour of Australia later this year. He has been given the responsibility to anchor India's innings at number three in place of veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara, who served at the position for a decade.
Talking about the match, India are in a solid position after bundling out Bangladesh for 149 in the first innings, and taking a massive 227-run lead. The ongoing fifty-plus partnership between Gill and Rishabh Pant has taken India's lead past 250. India look set to close the match inside four days and take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
