IND vs BAN Throwback: When Bangladesh upset India in the Cricket World Cup

By Chaithanya Gulapala

Cricket is a sport where upsets happen in the most unforeseen circumstances and any team can come out on top on a given day. As a result, underestimating a supposedly weaker team could prove to be costly for the stronger team as it can lead to nothing but unfavourable outcomes.

These uncertain elements against the run of play keep the fans on the edge of their seats. Case in point, Bangladesh achieved one of the most remarkable wins by getting the better of India in the group stage fixture of the ICC ODI World Cup 2007.

BAN 600

Sourav Ganguly was the lone warrior for India as he led the batting attack by example, scoring 66 (4 fours) whereas Yuvraj Singh provided some support with his 47 (3 fours, 1 six) whereas the rest of the batters fell prey to cheap scores.

Mashrafe Mortaza was the wrecker-in-chief as he accounted for 4 dismissals whereas the likes of Abdur Razzaq and Mohammad Rafique took three wickets each. On the other side of the coin, Bangladesh got support in the form of Tamim Iqbal (51), Mushfiqur Rahim (56*) and Shakib Al Hasan (53) in the run-chase.

Bangladesh aced the chase with nine balls to spare and won the game by five wickets. The defeat knocked India out of the competition as they failed to advance to the Super 8 stage. Mashrafe Mortaza was adjudged the Man of the Match for his performance.

Rahul Dravid and Co surrendered at the hands of Habibul Bashar and Co at Port of Spain, a defeat that still remains as a scar in the hearts of the Indian players who played the game.

It was undoubtedly India's biggest upset in the Cricket World Cup which was a dagger to the hearts of the Indian cricketers. The Indian fans could not fathom how their roller coaster ride turned out to be a disappointing ending as India's World Cup venture saw the end of the road.
