IND vs BAN: Two instances when Bangladesh eked out a draw against India in Tests

IND vs BAN: Bangladesh cricket team have played as many as eleven Test matches against Team India. Needless to say, they haven’t been able to crack the code to secure a win in all these encounters.

Out of the 13 matches played between the two nations, Team India emerged as the victorious side 11 times whereas the remaining two games ended in draws. However, both of these draws occurred on Bangladeshi soil.

IND vs BAN Two instances when Bangladesh played out for a draw against India

There was one instance when the Tigers came agonizingly close to pulling off a historic Test win but failed to seize the opportunity when it mattered as India came out on top much to Bangladesh's annoyance by winning the game by 3 wickets in Mirpur in 2022.

1. First Draw: BAN vs IND Chattogram Test in 2007

The first time when the Tigers managed to draw a Test against India was during India’s tour of Bangladesh in 2007 in Chattogram. It was well and truly a hard-fought battle, especially for the hosts as they gave everything in the game and literally showed no signs of slowing down.

Batting first, India put up a strong total of 387/8 before declaring the innings. Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly led the way with impressive centuries, scoring 101 and 100 runs respectively. Despite India’s dominance, the Tigers found a hero in Mashrafe Mortaza, who bowled brilliantly to account for 4 dismissals.

When it was Bangladesh's turn to bat, Mashrafe Mortaza once again came to the rescue, but this time with the bat as he top-scored with 79, which guided Bangladesh to 238. Despite the fact that they were still far behind India, Mortaza’s performance kept them in the hunt.

In their second innings, India declared the innings at 100/6, setting a target of 250. However, the hosts showed resilience and adopted a measured approach when it mattered. Javed Omar played a key role, scoring an unbeaten fifty as the hosts reached 104/2 before the game ended in a draw.

Mashrafe Mortaza was deservedly named the Man of the Match for his all-round performance. This was indeed a historic moment for Bangladesh as it marked their first-ever draw against India in Test cricket.

2. Second Draw: BAN vs IND Fatullah Test in 2015

The second draw between the two sides came during India’s tour of Bangladesh in 2015, in Fatullah. However, the hosts got lucky as the rain played a massive role in this game, with 248 overs lost due to bad weather.

Batting first, Team India posted a huge total of 462/6 (declared). Shikhar Dhawan was the star of the innings as he scored a magnificent 173, while Murali Vijay also made a brilliant contribution with 150.

On the other hand, Bangladesh were bowled out for 256 in their first innings. India immediately enforced the follow-on. However, before any further drama could unfold, rain washed away most of the remaining play. Bangladesh scored 23/0 in their second innings when the match ended in a draw.

One must note that the draw was less about Bangladesh’s performance and more about the weather. However, it still stands as one of the rare occasions when they managed to evade a defeat against India in Tests.
