IND vs ENG 1st Test: Jasprit Bumrah Scripts Asian History With Fifer, Breaks Kapil Dev's Record

IND vs ENG: Jasprit Bumrah once again proved why he is rated as the world's No. 1 Test bowler, delivering a stellar performance in the ongoing first Test between India and England at Headingley, Leeds.

On Day 3 of the Test, Bumrah picked up five wickets for 83 runs, not only rattling the English batting order but also etching his name in the history books with a series of remarkable records.

With this five-wicket haul, Bumrah became the first Asian bowler to claim 150 Test wickets in SENA countries - South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia. It came in just his 32nd Test match in these overseas conditions, a feat that underscores his dominance across continents.

In the list of Asian bowlers with the most wickets in SENA, Bumrah now leads, surpassing legends like Wasim Akram (146), Anil Kumble (142), Ishant Sharma (130), and Muttiah Muralitharan (125).

Bumrah's SENA record now stands at:

England: 42 wickets in 10 Tests

Australia: 64 wickets in 12 Tests

South Africa: 38 wickets in 8 Tests

New Zealand: 6 wickets in 2 Tests

The 31-year-old pacer also matched the legendary Kapil Dev for the most five-wicket hauls in away Tests by an Indian bowler. Both have claimed 12 five-wicket hauls outside India. Impressively, Bumrah achieved this milestone in just 34 Tests, while Kapil took 66. They are followed by Ishant Sharma (9), Zaheer Khan (8), and Irfan Pathan (7).

Bumrah's latest fifer included the scalps of Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, and Josh Tongue. He made early inroads on Day 2 by dismissing Crawley with the final ball of his first over and later clean bowling Duckett for 62. Root was caught in the slips after scoring 28. On Day 3, after going wicketless in the morning session, Bumrah returned with fire, knocking over Woakes and Tongue to complete his five-for.

India, who posted 471 in their first innings, faced a strong reply from England. Resuming Day 3 at 209/3, England suffered an early blow when Ollie Pope was dismissed for 106 by Prasidh Krishna. Harry Brook, dropped three times during his knock, powered on to 99 before attempting to reach his century with a six. However, his ambitious lofted shot off Krishna was caught by Shardul Thakur at the fine-leg boundary. Brook's innings featured 11 boundaries and earned him a standing ovation from his home crowd as he walked back disappointed.

Prasidh Krishna also contributed by removing Pope with a sharp short ball that was edged to Rishabh Pant behind the stumps. Despite the fielding lapses that marred India's performance - including three drops by Yashasvi Jaiswal - the team managed to bowl out England for 465, securing a narrow lead of six runs.

Bumrah's brilliance, backed by gritty bowling from Krishna, not only gave India a slender edge but also highlighted the enduring impact of high-class pace bowling in Test cricket's modern era.
