IND vs ENG 1st Test: Why India Lost in Hyderabad? Two Biggest Reasons Explained

India suffered a huge setback as they lost the first Test against England in Hyderabad. Rohit Sharma's men made a sorry surrender despite having upper hand in the majority of the match.

It is a huge blow for team India as they now trail the five-match Test series. Although there is still a long way to go, Rohit Sharma and his troops will have to buckle up in the remainder of the series.

IND vs ENG 1st Test

The defeat has also slipped India to 5th in the WTC 2023-25 table, as they have now 26 points in five matches with a PCT of 43.33.

It was a sudden yet rapid decline for India in the Test match. But here are three reasons why India lost the match in Hyderabad-

Lacklustre bowling in 2nd Innings

Team India had a huge upper hand after the first innings as they had a lead of 190 runs. England were also rattling at 163 for 5 in the 2nd innings. Just when the match seemed in the bag, they loosened the screw against the English batters and Ollie Pope capitalised on it. He went on to score 196 runs and gave England a platform to fight with the ball.

England went on to score 420 runs in the second innings, thus giving them a substantial lead of 230 runs. The Spinners and the Pacers struggled to pick up wickets on day three and it played a massive part in the outcome of the match.

A Shocking Batting Collapse

India had a target of 231 runs to chase, but they got bundled out for 202. But they were reeling at 119 for 7 at one stage, with all recognised batters already back in the pavilion.

But why did this happen? Yes, it was turning, but the Indian batters failed to apply themselves properly. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul got plumb in front, while Shreyas Iyer gave away his wicket cheaply. Shubman Gill's dismal form continued as the batter scored a duck.

From 42 for no loss, India lost all of their top batters within the next 77 runs, which a a massive cause for concern despite the conditions.

Tom Hartley, the English debutant ran riot in the Indian batting as he picked up seven wickets in the second innings. Despite all the proud cries to playing spin, India gave all their 20 wickets away to spin in the match.
