IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Jamie Smith Creates History, Breaks Alec Stewart's Record To Achieve MASSIVE Feat

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Jamie Smith continued his sensational form in the ongoing second Test against India at Edgbaston, Birmingham, rewriting history books with a career-defining knock. The 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, playing in just his second Test match, has now etched his name among the greats of English cricket with the bat.

Batting at No. 7 for Ben Stokes' side, Smith displayed composure and brilliance as he piled on 184 runs not-out. With that, he surpassed Alec Stewart's long-standing record of 173 runs - the previous highest individual Test score by an English wicketkeeper.

IND vs ENG 2nd Test

Stewart's innings had come way back in 1997 against New Zealand at Eden Park, Auckland, when he scored 173 while batting at No. 3.

Smith now stands alone at the top of England's wicketkeeper-batter milestones in Test cricket. The elite club of English stumpers who have crossed the 150-run mark in a single Test innings includes Smith, Stewart, Jonny Bairstow, and Jos Buttler - with the feat achieved a total of six times. Smith's innings at Edgbaston not only reaffirmed his rising stature but also brought stability and momentum to England's innings at a critical juncture.

In the larger context of Test cricket, the record for the highest individual score by a wicketkeeper remains with Zimbabwe's Andy Flower. The legendary left-hander scored an unbeaten 232 against India in Nagpur in 2000 - a mark Smith will have his eyes sometime in the future for sure.

So far in this match, Smith has also shared a marathon 303-run partnership with Harry Brook (158), rescuing England from a precarious 84 for 5. He was the last man standing in the crease as England were bundled out for 407. India in reply ended Day 3 with 64/1 with a lead of 244 runs.

With this stunning knock, Jamie Smith has not only cemented his place in England's Test setup but also delivered one of the finest innings ever seen from behind the stumps.
