IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Shubman Gill continued his red-hot form with the bat, smashing a breathtaking 161 off 162 balls on Day 4 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston (July 5). His blistering knock helped India declare their second innings at 427/6, after putting up a colossal 587 in the first innings.
The combined total of 1014 runs marked the first time India crossed the 1000-run mark in a single Test - a historic feat that places them among an elite group in red-ball cricket.

Before India's record-breaking display, only four teams had managed to score over 1000 runs in a Test on five different occasions. England still hold the overall record with 1121 runs against West Indies in Kingston in 1930, which included a mammoth 849 in their first innings.
India's previous best came against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2004 when they tallied 916 runs across both innings. However, that record now takes a backseat to their Edgbaston heroics.
Leading the charge was Gill, who has been in sublime touch throughout the series. He scored 269 in the first innings and added another 161 in the second, taking his match aggregate to a stunning 430 runs - the highest ever by a batter in an away Test. This broke former Australian captain Mark Taylor's 426-run record, set in Peshawar against Pakistan in 1998.
Only England legend Graham Gooch has ever scored more in a single Test match - his record of 456 runs (333 & 123) against India at Lord's in 1990 still stands tall. Gill now becomes just the fifth player in history to cross the 400-run mark in a Test match, joining an illustrious list featuring Gooch, Taylor, Kumar Sangakkara, and Brian Lara.
Appointed India's 37th Test captain in May 2025, Gill also became only the second skipper after Virat Kohli to notch up three centuries in the span of two Test matches - underlining his stature as India's new red-ball leader.
