IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Appointed India's 37th Test captain on May 24, 2025, Shubman Gill is already leaving a lasting impression in his debut series as skipper. The 25-year-old GT star has showcased his class with the bat in the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
After a marathon 269-run knock in the first innings, Gill remained unbeaten on 130 during the time of writing the article in the second innings at the end of Day 3.

With a towering six off Shoaib Bashir in the 53rd over, Gill crossed the 75-run mark in his second innings, taking his overall tally in the match to 345 runs. This remarkable feat has etched his name in Indian cricket history, as he now holds the record for the most runs scored by an Indian in a single Test match-surpassing the legendary Sunil Gavaskar's tally of 344 runs against the West Indies at Port of Spain in 1971. Gavaskar had scored 124 and 220 in that iconic match.
Before Gill's achievement, only nine Indian batters had crossed the 300-run mark in a Test match across ten instances. But now, Gill sits at the top of that elite list.
Globally, the all-time record for the highest aggregate in a Test match is held by former England captain Graham Gooch, who smashed 456 runs (333 & 123) against India at Lord's in 1990. Other notable names on the list include Australia's Mark Taylor (426), Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (424), and West Indies great Brian Lara (400).
Gill has also become the first Asian Test captain to score a double century in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries. If he manages to reach a century in the second innings, he will equal Gavaskar's rare feat of scoring both a hundred and a double hundred in the same Test match-something no other Indian batter has achieved to date.
