IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Who Has Scored An Overseas Double Century As India Test Captain Apart From Shubman Gill?

IND vs ENG 2nd Test: Shubman Gill etched his name in the history books on Thursday (July 3) by becoming only the second Indian Test captain to score a double century in an overseas match.

The 25-year-old right-hander reached the remarkable milestone on Day 2 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, continuing his stellar run of form in what is just his second game as India's red-ball skipper.

IND vs ENG 2nd Test

Gill's unbeaten double century came in challenging English conditions, as he brought up the landmark with a single in the 122nd over of India's first innings. His composed and authoritative knock not only steadied India's innings but also put him in elite company - alongside former captain Virat Kohli, the only other Indian skipper to have scored a double ton outside India in Test cricket.

Kohli's overseas double hundred came during India's 2016 tour of the West Indies. Leading the side in the first Test at North Sound, Antigua, Kohli produced a masterclass, scoring exactly 200 to help India post a mammoth total. It was a significant moment in his captaincy journey and marked the beginning of a phase where Kohli consistently led from the front in foreign conditions.

Until now, Kohli remained the sole Indian Test captain to achieve this rare feat away from home. With Gill joining the list, it signals a generational shift in Indian cricket - where the torch of leadership has been passed on, and the new captain is already delivering memorable performances.

Gill's double ton in England, historically one of the toughest places for subcontinent batters, also stands out for its significance. It's the first-ever double century by an Indian Test captain on English soil - something even legends like Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, and Kohli never accomplished.

As India look to take control of the five-match series, Gill's knock could go down as one of the defining moments in his leadership journey - and Indian cricket's next chapter abroad.
