IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Rohit Sharma-Ravindra Jadeja stitch fifty partnership after Jaiswal, Gill, Patidar depart cheaply

By MyKhel Staff

England rattled the Indian top order before captain Rohit Sharma fought back with a half-century to take the hosts to 93 for 3 at lunch on the opening day of the third Test here on Thursday.

Pacer Mark Wood (2/26) bowled a splendid opening spell, getting rid of opener Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) and Shubman Gill (0) before left-arm spinner Tom Hartley (1/30) accounted for Rajat Patidar (5).

Mark Wood rattled Jaiswal and Gill with his pace. Jaiswal edged a delivery to Joe Root in first slip, while Gill's edge landed into the gloves of wicketkeeper-batter. Patidar meekly ended up giving a catch to Ben Duckett at cover after a Tom Hartley delivery turned sharply after pitching.

India lost three of their batters in the first 45 minutes, before Rohit and local boy Ravindra Jadeja took the onus on them. Rohit (52 not out), who was dropped by Joe Root on 27, and Ravindra Jadeja (24 not out) steadied the Indian ship, sharing a 59-run partnership. This was Rohit Sharma's first Test fifty in nine innings and first in almost seven months.

Earlier, India won the toss and opted to bat first. Sarfaraz Khan and Dhruv Jurel made their India debut, while Kuldeep Yadav was picked ahead of Axar Patel. Pacer Mohammed Siraj, who was rested from the second Test, made his way back in place of Mukesh Kumar.

Brief Scores: India 93 for 3 in 25 overs (Rohit Sharma 52 batting, Ravindra Jadeja 24 batting; Mark Wood 2/26, Tom Hartley 1/30)
