IND vs ENG 4th Test: Shubman Gill Scripts History, Joins Don Bradman And Sunil Gavaskar In Elite List

IND vs ENG 4th Test: Shubman Gill has etched his name in the history books by becoming just the third Test captain to score four centuries in a single series, matching the legendary feats of Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar.

The Indian opener reached this rare milestone during India's second innings of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester on Sunday, July 27, 2025.

IND vs ENG 4th Test

Gill, who was named India's 37th Test captain on May 24, 2025, by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, has enjoyed a dream start to his leadership career. Making his captaincy debut in the first Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley on June 20, he began the series with a composed 147-run knock in Leeds.

The young skipper followed it up with a monumental performance in the second Test at Edgbaston, hammering 269 in the first innings and adding another 161 in the second - a rare double-century and century combo in the same match. His fourth hundred came at Old Trafford, where he calmly reached the landmark with a single off the final ball of the 83rd over, bowled by Chris Woakes.

Only two captains before him - Bradman in the 1947-48 series against India and Gavaskar during the 1978-79 West Indies tour of India - had achieved the feat of scoring four hundreds in a Test series while leading their side. However, neither went beyond that number. The all-time record for most centuries in a single Test series belongs to West Indies great Clyde Walcott, who smashed five tons in five Tests against Australia in 1955.

With this historic achievement, Gill has not only joined an elite group but also reinforced his stature as the torchbearer of India's new generation in red-ball cricket.
