India and England began the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at The Oval under grey, rain-heavy skies, and Day 1 proved as unpredictable as the series itself. England, captained by Ollie Pope in Ben Stokes' absence, won the toss and chose to bowl first on a damp, seamer-friendly surface. What followed was a day of stop-start action, momentum shifts, and an ominous rain threat hanging over the match like a cloud-both literal and metaphorical.
India's innings started cautiously, and they were quickly put under pressure by England's pacers. Yashasvi Jaiswal, after a prolific series, was dismissed for just 2, and KL Rahul also failed to convert his start. India were rattled early at 33 for 2. Stand-in skipper Shubman Gill attempted to steady the innings, but a mix-up with debutant Sai Sudharsan led to his run-out for 21-a moment of sharp fielding from Gus Atkinson.

But just as England looked to press their advantage, Karun Nair, making a surprise comeback to the Test fold, dug deep. Alongside Washington Sundar, he stitched together a measured and mature 51-run stand. Nair's fifty, his first in nearly nine years, was a throwback to his composure during his triple-century in 2016, and came at a critical moment for India. By stumps, India had recovered to 204 for 6, with Nair unbeaten on 52 and Sundar on 19.
The London weather is set to remain unpredictable on Friday (August 1) as well. The temperature is set to be around 21° C in the day, which can dip to around 15° at stumps. There is a 65 per cent probability of rain as well on the day, which can affect the match.
Rain might play a part at the Oval on the 2nd day as well. As per Accuweather, the rain can pour down in London at the latter half of the day. Although there is just around 5 per cent rain chance in the morning, it rises significantly after Lunch, which is around 50 per cent in the afternoon junction.
