IND vs ENG: Gautam Gambhir Clashes with Oval Ground Staff Ahead of 5th Test, Tensions Soar Before Decider

IND vs ENG: Tempers flared at The Oval on Tuesday (July 29) as India head coach Gautam Gambhir engaged in a fiery altercation with the ground staff, just two days before the decisive fifth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

The confrontation reportedly stemmed from dissatisfaction over the training facilities allocated to the Indian team upon their arrival in London.

India, arriving on Monday following their marathon effort in Manchester, had scheduled their first practice session at The Oval on Tuesday. However, sources indicate that Gambhir was left frustrated by what he deemed substandard preparation conditions.

The disagreement quickly escalated, with Gambhir allegedly shouting at the ground staff, "You can't tell us what to do!" in a heated exchange that turned physical in intensity, if not in action.

Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and other members of the Indian support team were forced to intervene to diffuse the situation. The Oval's ground staff, meanwhile, have reportedly threatened to file an official complaint against Gambhir, who remained defiant, responding, "You can go and report to whoever you want, but you can't tell us what to do."

Later, the curator, when probed by Indian media persons present at the ground about the reason for the heated exchange of words, termed the Indian coach a 'touchy person'. He didn't delve into the details.

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, while interacting with the media, said the altercation took place after the visitors were asked to stand '2.5 metres from the wicket'. He, however, clarified that the Indian team will not be filing any complaint.

"Honestly, one of the ground staff came and said (that we were required to) stand 2.5 metre from the wicket and 'go outside the rope and see the wicket'. I have never seen something like that," Kotak told media persons. "No complaint is needed for this," he added.

Kotak stated the Indian squad members were not wearing any spikes, so there was no danger to the surface. "Before this game, we had an idea that the curator is not the easiest person to work with. Being possessive is good, but not so much. We had joggers on (and) not spikes, so there was no danger," he said.

The controversy has added fuel to an already charged atmosphere ahead of Thursday's series finale. England currently lead the five-match series 2-1, after the dramatic fourth Test at Old Trafford ended in a historic draw.

India had trailed by a massive 311 runs after the first innings, and were rocked early in the second, losing both openers for ducks. But captain Shubman Gill stood tall, hammering his fourth hundred of the series.

His 417-ball partnership with KL Rahul (90) anchored the innings before all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar added centuries of their own. The duo batted through the final session, even declining Ben Stokes' offer for an early draw, instead chasing personal landmarks.

Despite England failing to secure victory, Stokes was adjudged Player of the Match for his commanding all-round display-141 runs and six wickets.

All eyes now shift to The Oval, where off-field tensions have set the stage for a high-stakes finale.
