IND vs ENG: 'Gill Has the Temperament, Bumrah Is Irreplaceable' - Venkatapathy Raju Weighs in on India's Leadership and Bowling Balance

By MyKhel Staff

As the Indian Test team prepares for its much-anticipated five-match series against England in the summer of 2025, former India spinner Venkatapathy Raju offered his insights on the dual challenges facing the Men in Blue - Shubman Gill's captaincy transition and the management of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah.

Speaking at a media programme by Sony Sports ahead of the series, Raju shared his thoughts on the young leadership, the pace bowling unit, and what lies ahead for India in swinging English conditions.

IND vs ENG Gill Has the Temperament Bumrah Is Irreplaceable - Venkatapathy Raju Weighs in on India s Leadership and Bowling Balance

With stalwarts like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepping away from the Test leadership role, the spotlight is now firmly on Shubman Gill. The 25-year-old has been elevated to captaincy after serving as vice-captain and continues to be seen as a long-term investment. Raju, who has seen multiple leadership transitions in Indian cricket over the years, believes Gill is cut out for the job - provided he gets the backing.

"He is a very cool guy. He has been doing well. He has been a match winner for us in a lot of games. And then, as a young captain, responsibility... We have been discussing. It again depends on the team. The team has to support him," Raju said.

Leadership, according to Raju, is not just about instincts but handling pressure during the most challenging phases of a match - especially in Test cricket where momentum shifts can be brutal and swift.

"See, any captain, it's not easy for them. There will be a lot of thinking, lot of planning. You have to take a lot of your own decisions when the match is just shifting away from you. But then, I think, he has been standing in the streets for a long time. He might have observed a lot and might have learnt a lot from the previous captains. One good thing about him is his temperament. He is very cool. And then, like I said, he is a match winner," he added.

While comparisons with past greats are inevitable, Raju reminded that transitions often come with teething phases. However, Gill's time as vice-captain and his involvement in team meetings offer confidence that he is not a novice to the system.

"He has been the vice-captain for some time. He has been part of the team meetings all this while. So, hopefully, he will come good. For me, I am very confident that he will be quite successful as a captain."

If Gill's captaincy is the story of hope and transition, Jasprit Bumrah's management is one of caution and preservation. India's premier fast bowler has had injury concerns in the past, and Raju emphasized that workload management - especially in a long series - will be critical.

"There have been news that he has to manage his injury and his workload... Managing him will be the first priority of Gill and Gautam Gambhir. How are they going to manage him in the long run. Once Jasprit Bumrah's bowling spell was done, Indian bowling was looking very ordinary in Australia. But then, Jasprit Bumrah is a guy who gives his 100%," he added.

With England's dry pitches and the potential lack of movement early on, Bumrah's reverse swing and sheer pace will be crucial. That said, Raju admitted the real challenge will be in rotation and support.

"The biggest challenge is how will you manage Jasprit Bumrah? But then, the moment Bumrah is not part of XI, they give an added advantage to the opposition side, which I have already seen in many matches."

While backups like Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna offer pace, Raju underscored that none match Bumrah's wicket-taking ability.

"Wicket-taking ability, there is nobody like Jasprit Bumrah. So, I think it will be very interesting for us to see how they manage him. That's why responsibility should be shouldered by Mohamed Siraj or Shardul Thakur or Nitish Reddy, where they can keep the match tight," he concluded.

India will be playing their first of the five matches at Headingley as it starts from June 20. The series will also mark the beginning of the new World Test Championship cycle.

The India tour of England will be shown live starting 3:30 PM on June 20, exclusively on Sony Sports Ten 1 and Sony Sports Ten 5 channels.
