IND vs ENG: How Can Jasprit Bumrah Play All FIVE Test Matches During England Tour?- EXPLAINED

As the Indian men's cricket team readies itself for a crucial five-match Test series against England, starting June 20 at Headingley in Leeds, all eyes are on one man - Jasprit Bumrah.

Ranked as the world's No. 1 Test bowler, Bumrah is expected to play a pivotal role in the series, which marks India's opening assignment in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.

However, there's a catch. As part of workload management, the Indian team management has hinted that Bumrah might feature in only three of the five Tests. The update was first shared by chief selector Ajit Agarkar during India's squad announcement on May 24, and later reinforced by head coach Gautam Gambhir during the team's pre-departure press conference on June 5.

But former India bowling coach Bharat Arun believes that limiting Bumrah might not be necessary-provided there is intelligent management and effective support from fellow pacers.

Bharat Arun's Take on Bumrah's Availability

Speaking on RevSportz, Bharat Arun, who played a key role in shaping Bumrah's early Test career, said that there is no reason to rule out Bumrah from playing all five matches if the environment around him is handled wisely.

"They are a perfect recipe for some bowler to get injured. So, obviously, we cannot control the number of overs that Jasprit Bumrah bowls in a match," Arun pointed out, cautioning against both over-bowling and under-preparation.

He advocated for a more flexible, recovery-based approach to workload management rather than pre-emptively resting Bumrah based on a fixed rotation.

"But according to the number of overs he bowls in the match, the practice sessions can be toned down for him where he needs to be working on his recovery. It can be a strength training session in the gym or some recovery work with the physios."

"So, handling him will be very crucial. And as you rightly mentioned, Bumrah's presence in the team adds huge value. Not only does he do well, but he also rallies the other bowlers," he added.

The Importance of Pacer Support

According to Arun, much of Bumrah's availability hinges on the performance and fitness of India's other fast bowlers. If others can shoulder their share of the burden, Bumrah can afford to conserve energy across the series.

"So, ideally, I would expect him to play all the Test matches. If there is very good support from the other bowlers, Bumrah can be preserved and play in all the five Test matches. If he is going to be bowling, taking a lot of the workload, then I am afraid he will not be ready for all five Tests."

He further emphasized that this cannot be a one-size-fits-all situation.

"So, how the other bowlers support him becomes very vital. So, we have got to take it as you go, rather than saying he is good for the first three Test matches, and then you need to give him a break. The other bowlers can help Bumrah play in all the Test matches if they are bowling really well."

Bumrah's Influence Beyond Wickets

Beyond his lethal spells with the ball, Bumrah's presence brings an intangible energy and leadership to the bowling unit-one that can lift the entire team in challenging English conditions. His ability to produce match-defining moments with both new and old ball is well known, but his presence also inspires confidence in India's bowling group.

If India can strike the right balance between usage, recovery, and team dynamics, Bumrah could very well feature in all five Tests, defying early concerns about workload.
