IND vs ENG : India Legend Slams KL Rahul For 1st ODI Approach, Unimpressed With Unnatural Game

By MyKhel Staff

IND vs ENG: India began their ODI series against England on a positive note, securing a four-wicket victory in the first match. While Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and Ravindra Jadeja delivered match-winning performances, KL Rahul had a forgettable outing with the bat.

Rahul, who was preferred as the wicketkeeper-batter over Rishabh Pant, managed just 2 runs off 9 balls, drawing criticism from legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.

Rahul walked in to bat when India needed just 28 runs to seal the win, with Gill unbeaten on 81 and within striking distance of a century. In an attempt to rotate the strike and help Gill reach the milestone, Rahul played a loose shot off Adil Rashid, gifting the bowler a simple return catch.

Sunil Gavaskar, who was on commentary at the time, was unimpressed with Rahul's approach. He criticized the batter for not playing his natural game and instead focusing on helping Gill reach his hundred.

"He should play his natural game. He is prodding to make sure his partner has a chance of getting a hundred. Look what happened. This is exactly what I was talking about. This is a team game, you don't have to do that. He was looking to tap the ball to help his partner get to a century. It was a half-hearted shot," Gavaskar remarked.

England, opting to bat first, got off to a strong start, with Phil Salt and Ben Duckett stitching together a 75-run opening stand. However, India's bowlers struck at regular intervals, preventing the visitors from capitalizing on the good start. Ravindra Jadeja and debutant Harshit Rana were the standout performers with the ball, picking up three wickets each as England were bowled out for 248. Despite fighting half-centuries from Jacob Bethell and skipper Jos Buttler, England fell short of setting a more challenging total.

In response, India's chase was anchored by Gill, who played a fluent knock of 86 runs. He found solid support from Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel, both of whom contributed crucial half-centuries. India comfortably reached the target in 38.4 overs, sealing a four-wicket win.

Gill's match-winning knock earned him the Player of the Match award, further cementing his reputation as one of India's most dependable young batters. With a 1-0 lead in the series, India will look to carry their momentum into the second ODI as England seek to bounce back.
