IND vs ENG: Joe Root injured on Day 3 of second Test, England provide worrying update on No. 2 ranked batter

IND vs ENG: In worrying news for the England cricket team, their former captain Joe Root had to leave the field early on Day 3 after injuring his right little finger while attempting to catch an edge from Shubman Gill.

Facing a length ball on off from spinner Tom Hartley, Gill went forward and played with hard hands, only to get a thick edge which flew towards the left of Root in the slip cordon.

The number two ranked Test batter in the world managed to get a finger to the ball but could not complete the catch as the ball went for a boundary.

"Joe Root sustained an external blow to his right little finger, attempting a slip catch in the first session of D3," England team management said in an update.

"The England medical team will keep him off the field for the time being to treat and ice. At this stage, there is no indication of when he will return to the field." Root hasn't been among runs in the series but claimed 4 for 79 and 1 for 41 in the first Test in Hyderabad.

Joe Root has failed to impress with the bat in the ongoing 5-Test series. The right-hander was dismissed for 29 and 2 in Hyderabad Test, and could score only 5 runs in the first innings of the second Test before falling to Jasprit Bumrah.

However, he has shined with his off-stump bowling. He picked five wickets including a five-wicket haul in the first innings of the Hyderabad Test.

Talking about the match, India have extended their lead to 370 runs at the stroke of Tea on Day 3. Shubman Gill roared back to form with his third Test hundred, and Axar Patel also chipped in with 45 runs off 84 balls.
