IND vs ENG: India announced their T20I squad for the five-match series against England, starting January 22, featuring a mix of youth and experience. However, the absence of several players from the T20 World Cup-winning squad raised eyebrows.
While Suryakumar Yadav continues as captain, seasoned stars like Rishabh Pant, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Shubman Gill are conspicuously missing.

The selectors cited workload management and injury concerns for some omissions, while others hint at a possible transition phase. With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 around the corner, India seems to be experimenting with newer faces to prepare for a packed cricketing calendar.
Suryakumar Yadav (c), Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel (vc), Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar, Dhruv Jurel (wk)
The T20 World Cup 2024 squad, which led India to their second title triumph, has seen a significant overhaul ahead of the England series. Out of the 15 members of the championship-winning side, only Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson, Rinku Singh, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, and Arshdeep Singh remain in the fold.
The current squad reflects a mix of fresh talent and experimentation, with 10 players from the World Cup lineup either rested, retired, or dropped.
The departures of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja mark the end of an era in Indian T20 cricket. Kohli and Rohit retired from T20Is immediately after lifting the World Cup, prioritising their focus on ODIs and Test cricket.
Kohli’s unmatched consistency and Rohit’s leadership will be dearly missed, while Jadeja’s all-round brilliance leaves a void difficult to fill. The trio’s absence has paved the way for younger players to step up, but their legacy will linger.
Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Mohammed Siraj have been rested as part of India’s workload management plan. Pant, fresh off a taxing Test series in Australia, is India’s preferred wicketkeeper in ODIs, with the ICC Champions Trophy around the corner.
Similarly, Jaiswal and Gill, who played pivotal roles in recent bilateral series, are being preserved for the high-stakes tournament. Siraj’s omission, too, reflects India’s cautious approach to managing its pace attack.
Yuzvendra Chahal, once a mainstay in India’s white-ball setup, continues to face exclusion. His omission from the World Cup squad and subsequent series suggests the selectors are looking beyond the experienced leg-spinner.
Similarly, Shivam Dube, a key member of the World Cup-winning team, has fallen out of favour. The rise of Nitish Kumar Reddy as a pace-bowling all-rounder seems to have pushed Dube out of contention. Kuldeep Yadav, battling injuries, remains out of action and is yet to regain his spot in the squad.
India’s spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is recuperating from a back spasm sustained during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With the ICC Champions Trophy on the horizon, his fitness is being closely monitored. Bumrah’s absence from the T20 squad highlights the management’s focus on having him ready for crucial ODI assignments.
The absence of 10 World Cup players underscores India’s transitional phase. While the current squad offers opportunities to younger talents like Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, and Tilak Varma, it also reflects the selectors’ cautious approach to balancing fitness, workload, and form. The England series will be a proving ground for these players to stake their claim ahead of bigger challenges.
