IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill weathers early storm to hit third Test hundred, celebrates in subdued fashion

IND vs ENG: Shubman Gill ended his 12-innings drought to his third Test hundred on Day 3 of the second Test against England in Visakhapatnam. The 24-year-old was in tremendous pressure ever since he started batting at number three.

The 24-year-old, who last played an innings of fifty-plus in Test cricket back in March 2023, survived two close DRS calls in successive overs of the first session on Day 3 before growing in confidence in finding his mojo.

Shubman Gill played his shots all around the ground and brought up his hundred on the 132nd ball of his innings. He smashed 11 fours and two sixes en route to his timely hundred before the selection for the remaining three Test matches in the series.

The innings for the 24-year-old right-hand batter was even more important as India lost the wickets of Rohit Sharma (13) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (17) inside the first four overs of Day 3.

Gill forged a crucial 81-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Shreyas Iyer (29). Later after Rajat Patidar got out for just nine runs, the youngster forged another important 89-run partnership with Axar Patel.

There was no candid celebration from Gill despite questions beings raised on his spot in the Indian Test squad. Notably, after taking Chetehswar Pujara's number three spot in the longest format of the game, Gill registered scores of 6, 10, 29*, 2, 26, 36, 10, 23, 0 and 34.

The presure was building on him, and there were chances of him getting dropped for the third Test in case of failure in the second innings of the Vizag Test as well.

Gill did not bow in his trademark fashion and just took off his helmet to thank the almighty and acknowledge the applause from the Indian dressing room and fans in the stadium.

He was dismissed by England debutant Shaoib Bashir but his 104-run knock off 147 balls had taken India's lead past 350 runs by then.
