IND vs ENG: Tilak Varma reveals important Gautam Gambhir talk after stellar Chennai knock

By MyKhel Staff

Tilak Varma played a sublime knock to take India over the line in a thrilling T20I encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday (January 25).

The Indian batter played a brilliant unbeaten knock of 72 runs off just 55 deliveries as the hosts won by 2 wickets against England.

Varma showed excellent temperament and skill to salvage India the crucial victory from the jaws of defeat. The Indian team faced turbulence in the run chase but the Hyderabad batter stayed in the kitchen amid heat and came out with flying colours.

After the fantastic knock, Varma was awarded Player of the Match and the batter revealed the instruction he got from head coach Gautam Gambhir prior to the match.

"I was talking with Gautam sir yesterday, he said whatever happens, you should play according to the situation. If team needs ten an over, you should take charge, if something else, you should stand till the end. We already played in South Africa where it was more difficult. We prepared well in the nets and here's the result," Tilak said.

The southpaw was the lone warrior with the bat and stitched a crucial 20-run partnership in the 9th wicket with Ravi Bishnoi.

"I said him (Bishnoi) to hold the shape and look to hit into the gap. One flick against the fast bowler and one four against Livingstone, it was extraordinary. That made it easier to finish the game," he added.

Tilak Varma has been in excellent form of late as the India player managed his third Player of the Match award in four matches. He scored two centuries in South Africa last year and has now amassed 318 runs in T20Is without getting dismissed.

India, with the victory, now lead the series 2-0 and will be facing England in the next match on Tuesday (January 28).
